DHL Partners Oxford University Press To Deliver New Textbooks to Papua New Guinea - "We are pleased to partner with the Oxford University Press and contribute to Papua New Guinea’s national effort in revamping their curriculum."

Singapore, 2 June 2010 – DHL, the world’s leading logistics company, has partnered with the Oxford University Press (OUP) to deliver nearly two million textbooks of 62 titles to over 3,000 primary schools in Papua New Guinea. These books were selected and packed into 4,000 identical sets for shipment via ocean freight. OUP secured the contract to be the key provider of textbooks for the Papua New Guinea National Department of Education, which had been awarded a grant from EuropeAid to revamp their national primary school English curriculum.

The first shipment of the textbooks departed from the Yantian China Oxford Hub on January 22, sailing through the Papua New Guinea Port of LAE and Port Moresby through to the delivery points at the 21 Provincial Headquarters of the Papua New Guinea National Department of Education. The delivery was completed within three weeks – faster than the estimated 2-3 months it would typically take to deliver 56,000 cartons across continents.

"We are pleased to partner with the Oxford University Press and contribute to Papua New Guinea’s national effort in revamping their curriculum. With our extensive global network and logistics capabilities, we were able to deliver the textbooks for the children’s education and ensure they receive the best quality resources on time," said Garrick Pold, Vice President, Asia Pacific, International Supply Chain, DHL Global Forwarding.

Due to the challenging nature of the rural environment in which the textbooks will be received, DHL utilized waterproof material such as wax paper, individual plastic bag wrapping and waxed boxes to transport the textbooks in so as to maintain the quality of the books. Special 10 foot containers were then used to transport the textbooks on land to solve the challenge of the inaccessibility of transport vehicles in such rural areas.

"Being a leading publisher of educational material, we pride ourselves in producing strong, diverse reference resources for a global audience. We have been in partnership with DHL for 5 years now, and working with them in this project to supply over 3,000 schools in Papua New Guinea with textbooks that will support the educational needs of so many children combines the expertise of two companies in an extremely meaningful undertaking," said Malcolm Fairbrother, Supply Chain Manager, Oxford University Press.
